It’s true that dental veneers can conceal multiple types of dental flaws – and that they can do so all at once! However, something you might not have considered as a cosmetic issue is crooked teeth. After all, you need braces or clear aligners to take care of something like that, right?

Not necessarily. Actually, dental veneers might be able to achieve the smile results you want in less time than an orthodontic treatment. Keep reading for the details.

Understanding Dental Veneers

When it comes to straightening out crooked teeth, there’s a pretty fine line with what dental veneers can accomplish. But that line won’t make much sense if you don’t know what dental veneers are and how they work.

Dental veneers are a thin, porcelain shell that your dentist adheres to the face of your teeth. They’re custom-made, so your dentist can adjust the size, shape, and color of the veneers to match your teeth for a consistent look. Typically, a little bit of dental enamel is shaved off your natural teeth to make room for the veneers, but other than that, your original pearly whites remain largely untouched.

Can Dental Veneers Correct My Misalignment?

Make no mistake, dental veneers cannot“correct” misalignment. They don’t shift your teeth or jaw in any way, so they can’t fix a bite problem or severe angles.

What they can do is hide the gaps between teeth and uneven sizing. To onlookers, it will seem as though your dental flaws have disappeared! In reality, those flaws are cleverly and artistically covered up by a thin porcelain shell.

How to Know if Dental Veneers are Right for You

So if it’s all just an illusion, why would you want to bother with dental veneers? Why not just go through with an orthodontic treatment?

If your teeth are only minorly crooked, and not causing you any annoyances besides cosmetic unpleasantness, you might prefer the quicker treatment time. Dental veneers can be fitted in as little as two appointments over the course of a few weeks. Metal braces and clear aligners, on the other hand, take at least a few months to properly adjust your oral structure.

Another benefit of dental veneers is that they can add a layer of protection to your teeth. If weakened enamel is making your pearly whites overly sensitive and more cavity-prone, then a dental veneer treatment could definitely be worth it. The porcelain shell might be thin, but it’s more than capable of taking over for your compromised enamel!

With all of that in mind, it’s important to ask your dentist about the possibility of dental veneers. They know what dental thresholds to look for, so they can tell you if this cosmetic treatment would achieve the smile results you want. If dental veneers are a good match, congratulations! You’ll be on your way towards your dream smile before you can say “abra-kadabra”.
